- James Scott, the son of William Scott [7347] was born in Scotland in 1570 and may have emigrated to Sweden with his father in 1601. He first appears in Sweden as a captain in Patrick Ruthven's [SSNE 3413] troops in 1610. He was senior quartermaster and captain of a company of Swedish infantry in 1621. By 1622 he was a captain in the Finnish infantry. He moved to Nils Ribbing's Osterbotten regiment in 1623 and became a lieutenant colonel for a Finnish regiment in Narva in 1627. Scott acted as a lieutenant colonel at a garrison in Narva and in 1628 and he became colonel of a regiment from Norrland that year (some sources say Vasterbotten). His troops were used along with Ruthven's for the defence of Dirschau in 1629. In 1630 he was colonel for a regiment from Viborg area. Scott later became a colonel for Åbo and a commandant at Narva in 1634. At some point during his career, sources exist which suggest Scott acted as the governor of Riga. He died on 29 January 1635. He was married to Margaret Gibson [SSNE 2834]. His son Jacob Scott [SSNE 3445] was also in Swedish service while his daughter Christina [SSNE 6248] married Thomas Kinnemond [SSNE 2832].
