- Leon Stoltze, 81, of East Hartland, beloved husband of Joan Emma (Loesch) Stoltze, passed away after a long illness on Thursday, (May 17, 2012) at home with his family by his side. Born in Hampstead, NY, son of the late Leon and Helga (Persson) Stoltze, he grew up in Long Island, NY, and lived in Maryland and New Jersey before moving to East Harland in 1957. In 1953, he graduated from the State University of New York at Fort Schuyler, Bronx, NY, with a BS ME Degree. He was a commissioned officer of the line in the U.S.N.R. from 1955-1957. Leon was on active duty while assigned to the Navy Bureau of Aeronautics, Washington, DC. He was employed by Hamilton Standard in Windsor Locks as a Mechanical Engineer for over 34 years, retiring in 1991, and held seven patents for innovations in aeronautical equipment design. He attended the First Church in Hartland, Congregational Men's Coffee Club. Leon served as a member of the Hartland Board of Education in the 1960s and as a chairman of the Board of Finance from 1992-1997. He was also a lifelong amateur radio enthusiast with the call letters W1EN. He was a recreational sailor, having modified a Venture 24ft. sailboat to a 29ft. sailboat and used it in Long Island Sound. He later owned an Alcan house cruiser and regularly motored from Watch Hill, RI to Block Island, Shelter Island, and Greenport. He also enjoyed traveling to Cape Cod and Martha's Vineyard on summer cruises. Leon was a former member of the East Hartland Volunteer Fire Department and a member of the Hartland Historical Society. Besides his beloved wife, Joan, he is survived by five sons, Christopher Stoltze and his wife Anji Seth of Tolland, Clifford Stoltze and his wife Carol of Newton, MA, Mark Stoltze and his wife Debra of New Canaan, Paul Stoltze and his wife Terry of Sturbridge, MA, and David Stoltze and his wife Kathy of Brighton, MI; a daughter, Jane and her husband Timothy Loftus of Manchester; fifteen grandchildren, Lea Min, Samuel, Fiona, Nicholas, Co...
