Mr Nielsen was born at Ronne, Bornholm, Denmark, on Aug 22 1848 and would therefore soon have been 78 years of age. In his boyhood days he learned the stone cutting, carpentry and printing trades. On August 19, 1866 he joined the L.D. S. Church in Denmark. After performing a two year mission in his native land he married Margrethe Fredricksen and immigrated to Brigham City, Utah in 1871. He here found employment as a cabinet maker and later became manger of the furniture department of the Coop Mercantile Institution, which position he held for many years, until he went to Denmark on his second mission. For five months he was traveling Elder and the remaining part of the two years he was President of the Copenhagen conference. It was said of Mr Nielsen that he was one of the most faithful and successful missionaries in Denmark, and was the means of bring many good people into the Church. On returning from his mission he organized the J.C. Nielsen Furniture Co. In addition to taking care of the furniture business he was Secy and Treas. of the Box Elder Building and Loan Association, justice of the Peace and Ward Clerk, also taking an active part in politics and civic affairs.
In the year 1897 he moved to Montpelier, Idaho where he and his sons Thor C. and Frantz F engaged in the furniture business which was continued successfully for many years. Wishing to retire from active business affairs he moved to Salt Lake City in 1912 and here worked unceasingly at his favorite occupation of writing and art painting. Mr Nielsen has written several books on Scandinavian history, sociology, religion and other subjects. His paintings have been liberally distributed and at present there are several hundred of beautiful painting in his home and among the member of his family. Mr Nielsen was a great lover of nature and traveled a great deal having made eleven trips to his native country and visited many other parts of the world.
On March 28, 1919 his beloved wife Margrethe passed away and was buried at Long Beach, and three years later a daughter, Mrs. Lydia McCart also passed away. In July he married Julia Petersen and they made their home at 868 Jefferson St. until his death. Mrs Thor Nielsen and Mrs Rrantz F. Nielsen were also with him.
Mr Nielsen was a kind hearted man, honest conscientious in all his dealings and was loved and respected by all who knew him. A few days before his death he expressed his readiness to pass on to his reward believing that his Heavenly Father would judge and reward in love and justice and that he would meet and be with his wife and daughter and dear friends who have gone before. Mr Nielsen was a very firm believer in a better life to continue after this. He will be taken to Long Beach, California and be laid to rest in the Sunnyside Cemetery.
